Training & Liaison

As part of their induction programme, all new staff rece ive training in 'Understanding Sensory Issues in ASD.' A range of training courses relating to emotional well-being and sensory issues are delivered to the whole staff team as well as external professionals. Parent workshops are also run throughout the school.

Liaison

Parents -

The Occupational Therapist is available for consultation during the twice yearly parents' evenings.
Where relevant, home visits and/or telephone contact will be made.
Parent workshops on 'Relaxation' and 'Understanding Sensory Issues in ASD' are held throughout the year with a choice between daytime and evening sessions.
Parents are kept informed of their child's progress in individual or small group sensory and well-being sessions via the home school book.

Staff -

The Occupational Therapist and/or the Occupational Therapy Assistant meet with staff both formally through meetings and informally to advise on specific sensory issues and strategies, differentiating lessons and incorporating relaxing and alerting activities into the timetable. Advice on promoting and supporting emotional well-being on an individual and class group basis is also provided.
Behaviour support – The Occupational Therapist and/or the Occupational Therapy Assistant attend all Behaviour Support Meetings to help identify sensory related causal or contributory factors to behaviours and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to devise proactive and reactive methods of intervention.
