Positive Behaviour Support

Wargrave House School recognises that its children and young people may present with behaviours of concern.

Wargrave House School is committed to developing good practices and sound internal procedures supporting learner behaviour. This ensures that behaviours of concern are handled sensitively, safely, professionally and legally in ways which support the needs of the children, young people and staff.

Wargrave House believes that by using proactive strategies within a carefully structured and monitored curriculum, many behaviours of concern can be reduced. Proactive strategies are designed to produce change over time.

Our primary role is the identification and amelioration of those behaviours which may severely limit the child or young person’s ability to learn and develop and which, if left unchanged, would restrict that individual’s breadth and experience in the world.

Positive Behaviour Support

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) involves working in partnership with the person and those closest to them. It aims to improve quality of life in a respectful and dignified way and put support in place so that the behaviours of concern are reduced or no longer needed by the individual. PBS is person-centred and does not consider the behaviour in isolation – it is considered within the context of the life of the individual. We recognise that all behaviours serve a function and are a method of communicating. We are committed to trying to understand the reasons behind the behaviour and supporting the student and those around them to identify strategies, learn new skills and make environmental changes so that the need to use this behaviour of concern is reduced.

In cases where behaviours of concern persist and further support is required behaviour assessments will be carried out and a positive behaviour support plan will be put in place.

Individual positive behaviour support plans are drawn up by the multi-disciplinary team of professionals who work regularly alongside the child and include consultation with parents/carers.

Targets established are reviewed on a daily basis with evaluation of the plan as a whole taking place after a set period of time.

Physical Intervention

It is recognised that there will be a small number of occasions when some form of physical intervention may be necessary in order to ensure the safety of students and staff.

It is the intent of PROACT-SCIPr-UK® to minimise the use of physical interventions and to emphasise sound behavioural support strategies based on an individual’s needs, characteristics and preferences.

The school has 2 fully trained PROACTSCIP tutors to ensure staff are fully up-to-date and familiar with appropriate techniques.


All staff at Wargrave House School have undertaken an accredited training course in the Team-Teach methodology.

Team-Teach is a positive handling strategy including a wide range of gradual and graded supports and interventions. Over 95% of these relate to diversion, diffusion and de-escalation. In a small minority of instances physical interventions may be used to keep people safe while other positive handling strategies continue.

In the Team-Teach approach physical interventions are not an alternative to de-escalation, they are an integral part of the Wargrave House holistic approach to supporting behaviour.
